Biography

Xuemei joined the University of Dundee as a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Structural Engineering in 2023. She holds a diverse multidisciplinary background spanning Structural, Energy, and Mechanical Engineering, having completed her Master’s degree at Zhejiang University and her PhD at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Prior to her appointment at Dundee, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at PolyU (2022–2023) and has been an affiliated researcher at the Chinese National Engineering Research Centre for Steel Construction (Hong Kong Branch) (CNERC) since 2016. 

Her research has attracted funding and support from major international and national bodies, including Horizon Europe, the Royal Society, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), among others. Her work on high-strength steel bolted connections has informed technical documents supporting Eurocode 3 (EN 1993-1-1) and the Hong Kong Code of Practice for the Structural Use of Steel.

Notable recognitions of her contributions include the Outstanding Young Researcher Award (2021) from CNERC and the Postdoctoral Fellowship (Postdoc Matching Fund Scheme, 2022) from PolyU. As an official co-recipient and core team member, she received the Commendation Merit Award (Research & Development Category) at the Structural Excellence Awards (2019) from The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), and the Grand Award of Science and Technology Awards (2022) from the China Steel Construction Society, one of the top national awards for steel construction in China.

Editorial service

Xuemei serves as Youth Editor for The Innovation (a Cell Press partner journal) and sits on the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Built Environment. She has Guest-edited special issues for several journals, including Sustainability, Buildings, and Frontiers in Built Environment, on topics ranging from sustainable steel and composite structures to the resilience of steel buildings. 

She also regularly serves as a peer reviewer for leading international journals in civil engineering, materials science, and energy systems, including: Journal of Structural Engineering (ASCE), Thin-Walled Structures, Engineering Structures, Journal of Constructional Steel Research, Steel and Composite Structures, Engineering Failure Analysis, Structures, and Journal of Energy Storage. She was awarded the Excellence in Reviewing Award by Elsevier in 2024, 2025, and 2026, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the Journal of Constructional Steel Research

Research

Xuemei’s current research cuts across sustainable and smart engineering structures, and renewable energy technologies, with a particular emphasis on:

  • Structural steel design and reliability analysis
  • High-performance metallic materials (high-strength/stainless steel, shape memory alloy)
  • Fracture of metallic materials
  • Renewable energy (offshore renewable energy technologies)

Her research work is widely published in leading international journals in civil engineering and energy systems, such as Engineering Structures, Thin-Walled Structures, Steel and Composite Structures, Journal of Constructional Steel Research, Energy Conversion and Management, International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, and Journal of Energy Storage
