PhD opportunity
Vision-informed integrity assessment of corroded steel structures in offshore environments
Unfunded
31 December 2027
Overview
Corrosion is one of the most significant threats to the long-term safety of offshore steel structures, including the rapidly expanding offshore wind sector. Automated, image-based inspection techniques are increasingly being adopted, yet they largely focus on detecting and classifying corrosion rather than on what the observed damage means for structural performance. This PhD project will explore how computer vision and artificial intelligence can be combined with structural engineering methods to support the assessment of corroded steel structures, bridging the gap between inspection data and decisions on structural safety and maintenance.
The project is jointly supervised by researchers in structural engineering and computer vision at the University of Dundee. The successful candidate will develop a valuable combination of skills in artificial intelligence and structural assessment, relevant to the offshore energy, infrastructure and asset management sectors. Prospective applicants are welcome to contact Dr Xuemei Lin to discuss the project in more detail.
