Biography
Stephen Martin is a Lecturer in Neuroscience with research interests in memory and the mechanisms of antidepressant action. He completed a PhD in Neuroscience and postdoctoral research at the University of Edinburgh before joining the University of Dundee in 2013, first as manager of the Behavioural Neuroscience Core Facility, and subsequently as a Discovery Fellow and Lecturer.
Research
Stephen’s research focusses on the behavioural neuroscience and physiology of brain function. A central theme is how the hippocampus stores information, including the synaptic changes that allow memories to persist, and the role of brain oscillations in coordinating these synaptic changes. A second theme concerns the mechanisms of antidepressant action, and preclinical research into novel therapeutics. Many effective antidepressant drugs alter the functioning of glutamate and GABA receptors in the hippocampus and other brain areas, and subtype-selective modulators of these receptors offer novel strategies for the treatment of depression and anxiety.
Teaching
Stephen is course lead for the MSc Applied Neuroscience programme, and makes regular contributions to the BBSE, BMSc Neuroscience, and MBChB programmes.
