Biography

Peter graduated with merit from in teaching from Dundee University in 1984 before entering a career in primary education in Perth and Kinross and Angus Councils. He has taught all age stages during his 33 year school career, in a range of schools; inner city, rural and suburbs. Peter has been a headteacher of two schools. 

Peter is currently involved in an international school project in Moshi, Tanzania.

In 2012, Peter was invited to be a Commissioner on the Scottish Government’s Rural Commission looking into the delivery of education in rural areas throughout Scotland. This report was published in April 2013. Working with a diverse team gathered from over Scotland, as a rural headteacher, Peter was able to contribute from a very practical perspective with a sound working knowledge of rural issues.

Throughout his career, Peter has gained post-graduate qualifications in Teaching Primary Science, Teaching Mathematics and a number of additional Masters level professional interests. In 2009, Peter graduated from the University of Stirling with a Postgraduate Masters Diploma in Educational Leadership and Management.

Prior to being appointed to a teaching and scholarship post at the University of Dundee in 2017, Peter worked as headteacher of an inner city school in Perth, Scotland, gaining invaluable leadership experience in multi-agency working, particularly in the field of Child Protection.

Peter has a specific research interest in the current gender imbalance amongst primary school students and teachers in Scotland. He has an interest in identifying and supporting what may be seen to be minority groups of students and teachers, with a view to reducing attrition rates amongst minorities. He is particularly interested in the benefits of precise formative feedback upon student and teacher improvement and retention.

In the wider university, Peter in a member of the Gender sub-group, looking at ways of improving the university and placement experience for all students. He is also a member of the university Athena-Swan working group.

Teaching

Peter is currently teaching on the M.A. undergraduate programme, the full time Post-Graduate programme and on both the Learn to Teach and National Learn to Teach postgraduate programmes. He has recently become a tutor on the Teaching Qualification for Further Education (TQFE).
