Biography

Professor Peter C Hewlett is an internationally known figure specialising in materials science and in particular concrete. He has almost 60 years experience in the construction and building materials sectors. He has been Visiting Industrial Professor at the University of Dundee since 1986 and has provide expert advice and supervision in the fields of cement and concrete science and technology.

Previously, the Director of the British Board of Agrément and prior to that the Director of Cementation Research Limited. He has over 200 publications, various patents and 3 books including Leas’s ‘The Chemistry of Cement and Concrete’ (5th Edition). He is a Chartered Chemist, Chartered Scientist and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and has an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Dundee University for his work on concrete durability.

A previous President (3 times) of the UK Concrete Society and the Institute of Concrete Technology. He holds the UK gold medal of the Concrete Society.

Other positions held include past President of the European Organisation for Technical Approvals and the European Union of Agrément. He was also previous Chairman of the UK Research and Development Society and the Cement Admixtures Association.

For the last 10 years he has been concerned with low carbon concretes and in particular Alkali Activated Cementitious Materials (AACMs).

He was awarded the Officers Cross of Merit by the Polish Government for technical cooperation and scientific excellence.

He is passionate about fundamental research leading to understanding and resulting in beneficial practical outcomes.
