Biography

I lead the Faculty of Life Sciences, a world-renowned centre of excellence for cellular and molecular sciences. The Faculty is the top University department for biological research in the UK as measured by the Research Excellence Framework and has been since 2014. Our research has global impact and we are considered one of the most influential Institutes on Pharmaceuticals. Our track record in partnering with industry and our successful track record in company formation demonstrates our focus on real world outcomes from our research. Previous to this, I worked as the deputy head and general manager of the MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (MRC PPU), a leading centre in understanding the signalling pathways in health and disease.

My principal personal research interests have been in the biochemistry of disease, particularly neurodegeneration. More recently, my lab has been working on major challenges in therapeutic development in partnership with multiple pharmaceutical partners. My lab uses a range of techniques including in vitro models of human disease, proteomics and advanced imaging techniques that allow us to study disease in a more relevant context.

I have previously worked on a diverse range of projects including Prion chemistry and physics, CJD and other TSE’s, Alzheimer’s, cancer and diabetes.

I also enjoy many teaching and development interests, especially around bio-business and helping researchers fully realise the translational potential of their work.
