Biography
Patrick Spielmann is a Consultant Otolaryngologist with a main are of practice in Otology/Neurotology. He is the lead for vestibular services and lateral skull-base surgery. He also regularly undertakes surgery for chronic ear disease and auditory implants. He was trained on the East of Scotland Otolaryngology Rotation and undertook a fellowship in otology, cochlear implantation and skull-base surgery in Auckland, New Zealand, 2011-12. He runs specialist clinics for patients with vestibular disorders, auditory implants, lateral skull-base tumours and children with microtia.
Awards
- He was awarded the gold medal for his performance in the FRCS exam by the Royal Society of Medicine in 2010.
- ‘Clinical Otolaryngology’ prize for best Systematic Review in 2010 (£2000)
- Charles Holland Scholarship to support Otology/Neurotology fellowship 2011 (€6000)
- TWJ travelling award to visit Causse Ear Clinic in Beziers 2014
Research
Patrick is the Principal Investigator for a number of multi-centre commercial and non-commercial studies:
AVERTS 2 (investigating a novel drug delivery of Meniere's Disease)
VERS (investigating the safety and effectiveness of middle ear hearing implants).
NATTINA (investigating the effectiveness of tonsillectomy for recurrent tonsillitis)
He has collaborated with Professor Abel to research the effect of noise generated by drilling temporal bones.
Member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers at the RCS Edinburgh.
Postgraduate
Otology tutor for NHS Education Scotland, to run temporal bone dissection courses at the Dundee Institute of Healthcare Simulation.
