Biography

Charlie Shepherd holds an MEng in Civil Engineering from the University of Dundee, graduating in June 2020. During his Honours project, he investigated the thermo-mechanical behaviour of rock salt, in relation to borehole closure.

Charlie retuned to the University of Dundee in late April 2021 pursuing a PhD in Civil Engineering. The focus of his research is on the use of alternative concrete free foundation solutions for overhead line foundations, with the context of reducing the amount of concrete and potentially more damaging operation of creating haul roads in often remote and challenging terrain, along the network. Focusing on the optimisation of both steel grillage foundations and the use of screw pile groups, with a focus on enhanced determination of uplift capacity and uplift capacity enhancement

The research is funded through the Energy Technology Partnership (ETP) and industry partner Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN).
