Biography
I joined the University of Dundee in 2020 as a lecturer with a focus of teaching on mental health and developmental psychology. I coordinate and teach a popular optional module on my subject expertise of adversity in childhood and subsequent mental health consequences. I also oversee Psychology’s MSc-level dissertation module and MSc-level practicum module – for the latter I collaborate with external organisations to provide student placement opportunities. I coordinate the MSc Psychology (Conversion) programme, and I supervise dissertations at undergraduate and postgraduate level. In addition, I work with colleagues from other subject disciplines to deliver introductory sessions on trauma-informed practice to students in law, community education, education and social work. More recently, I am exploring how a trauma-informed approach could be implemented into higher education.
I have a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Edinburgh (2018) which explored how adults recover from experiences of childhood maltreatment and domestic violence. In 2019, I became a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society. Prior to my current appointment, I held research positions at the University of Strathclyde investigating the extent and range of gender-based violence on Scottish campuses, and at the University of Edinburgh investigating deterrence of online child sexual abuse. I also worked as Assistant Psychologist in 2014-2015. On several occasions, I delivered training in the third sector on subjects including trauma, mental health, and bystander intervention.
Research
My research explores adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their impact on mental wellbeing and emotional and social development throughout the life span. Related areas of interest include emotion regulation, interpersonal skills/difficulties, loneliness, complex trauma, and resilience. I am also interested in research exploring the implementation and effectiveness of the trauma-informed approach. Most of my recent research involved qualitative research methods. In addition, I value complementing qualitative findings with quantitative findings.
