The CIC-START CTP is a multi-partner PhD Programme linking academic expertise with industry across the UK’s potato and cereals sectors. Co-designed PhD projects and 3-6 month industrial placements provide valuable experience, alongside training across the crop supply chain. Research focuses on sustainable agriculture, crop and soil health, and reducing waste and GHGs to drive innovation in UK food and farming.

Structured training and mentoring programme: High-level Bioscience and Generic Skills training. Aligns with the aims of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.

Our four-year programme places our research students on industry inspired projects leading to award of PhD or EngD. The EngD qualification is an alternative to a traditional PhD aimed at students seeking a career in industry, and reflects the innovative nature of industrial research.

Our students join a multi-university network of like-minded researchers, led by Heriot-Watt University, and can take courses at many Scottish Universities. Around 75% of their time is spend working directly with a company, in addition to receiving advanced-level training from a broad portfolio of technical and business courses.
