Histology is the scientific study of cells.

In this module, you will investigate the cells and tissues that are found in the human body. An understanding of the normal structure of cells is needed so that altered cells can be identified during clinical tests. For example, this understanding is used to identify cancer cells in a tissue sample taken from a patient.

Histology is also used to study embryological development.

What you will learn

In this module you will:

  • use microscopes to identify cell types during practical sessions
  • use a virtual online microscope during tutorials and for revision
  • learn about epithelial cells and connective tissue
  • learn about muscle and nerve cells
  • learn about cells found in the respiratory and cardiovascular systems
  • learn about cells found in the digestive system and organs
  • learn about the cells found in skin

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • identify and describe the normal structure of cells in epithelia and connective tissue
  • identify and describe the normal structure of muscle and nerve cells
  • identify and describe the normal structure of cells found in the respiratory and cardiovascular systems
  • identify and describe the normal structure of cells found in the digestive system and organs
  • identify and describe the normal structure of skin cells
  • use a microscope
  • use the virtual microscope
