The market for technical products and services is highly competitive and rapidly expanding. In order to successfully develop a commercial product, it is important to understand markets and product management to complement your technical know-how.

By incorporating the principles of technology innovation management, you can ensure your products meet the needs of the market and that you are able to create solutions that are both innovative and commercially viable. This can help you make a significant impact in your field.

This module will explore the fundamental principles of technology and innovation management. It will also give you some insight into product development and management as a potential career path.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • study product management, including development and marketing considerations
  • learn about product positioning, a process to create a unique image for a product in the minds of a target audience
  • explore methods to create a business model
  • learn about intellectual property, licensing, assignation, and technology transfer
  • understand the importance of due diligence
  • explore further legal, social, ethical, and professional issues (LSEPI) in computer science

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate your understanding of the principles of e-commerce business process modelling
  • understand the characteristics of a market-led product development culture
  • show awareness of the product roadmap and product development cycle
  • demonstrate your understanding of the legal and ethical implications of intellectual property and due diligence
  • design a commercially focussed product development process
  • develop and present a market report
