Art, Science & Visual Thinking MFA

Understanding fate and chance using concepts of Life, Art and Astronomy.

About

After being in the field of science for almost 10 years, when I decided to try and look at Science from a different perception, I chose to try Art as my medium. The concepts of celestial phenomenon and stars have always fascinated me. I always enjoyed reading about the constellations, galaxies and the happenings of the space. But never had I ever noticed the similarities shared by life sciences and astronomy. Through my present work I am learning to explore these commonalities and create visuals.

I have used digital media, printmaking and ceramics for my investigation. For the degree show, I am focusing on how everything has its fate or happens by chance.

The prints are inspired from the idea of how the process of star formation and cell division are visually similar. I used the thought of cell division happening in space with all the surrounding space gases and environment helping the process. The patterns are the supporting elements which help in formation of the stars and cell division and hence they keep changing in each stage of division.

I have ceramic DNA sculptures of different shapes and colours to depict how we all  differ from each other and all our fate and health is decided by our genes.

The animations in this show shows the genetic disorders occur by chance and there is not a specific way to know if we will inherit it and genetic testing helps us to understand this chance of inheritance.

Happy Accidents

These are the prints which i used while i was testing the inks and the press. I tried all different colours and layers overlapping them while testing out variations before i printed my final prints. Though these prints were suppose to be my rough work, they turned out to be an artwork in itself.

Creation

These prints show my thoughts of how cell division would occur in space surrounded by space gases and environment.

These are my ceramic pieces hanging in the space. These DNA helixes denote how we all differ from each other.
