End Scroll

‘End Scroll’ supports a night-time disconnection ritual. A seamless connection between the app and Enso Ring Light provides a fulfilling conclusion of screen time and allows you to detach from the thoughts and feelings of your day.

By deconstructing the micro-animations of manipulative design and dark patterns such as infinite scrolling and content refresh the End Scroll app transforms the experience of technology addiction. Flipping these techniques into satisfying interactions that use persuasive design in a positive, productive way.

The app encourages daily reflection through an innovative user interface, utilising the symbolism of a ‘message in a bottle’. Drawing inspiration from Japanese design and zen philosophy the app illustrates your day as a bottle rolling down a mountainous landscape. As you descend the mountain by completing a final scroll, a series of interactions are triggered to fill the void of intrusive night-time thoughts and finally break that endlessly, infinite social media scroll. These prompts enable you to immerse within the symbolism of the ritual filling the bottle with personal aspects of your day. Creating a unique visual experience every night.

As the bottle reaches the base of the mountain, the app wirelessly connects to the Enso Ring Light where the phone is placed and rotated to activate a sunset light chain. Using haptic vibrations, this movement allows you to set how long the light will take to fade to darkness in preparation for sleep. Once set your day will float away, while you do an alternate activity replacing the toxic cycle of doom-scrolling. When the sunset is dark it’s time to attempt sleep, feeling relaxed and now less likely to reach for your phone as the disconnection ritual is complete.
