for Mental Health Nursing BSc
This information is for applicants who have received an invitation to an interview for Nursing courses at our Dundee City campus. We are currently reviewing the format and method used for interviews. We aim to have this confirmed for September.
About your interview
If you are invited to interview you must attend in person on one of the pre-scheduled dates. In exceptional circumstances, we may be able to offer you a video interview. For further information, please email us.
When you receive your interview booking confirmation, you will see your arrival time stated clearly. This time includes registration so there is no need to arrive earlier than the time stated.
Before you begin your interview, we will verify your identity against the details provided in your application. Please bring your photo ID with you on the day.
This will take around 20 minutes.
Issued by a government agency or professional institution showing your name, date of birth, and a clear image of your face.
Examples include your photocard driving licence (full or provisional), passport, national ID card or Young Scot card.
What to expect
Our interview takes the form of Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs):
- There are 5 interview stations in total.
- You will spend 6 minutes at each station.
The MMI format is designed to assess your thinking skills, your personal values, and your ability to communicate. Each of these are hugely important in shaping the kind of nurse you will be and at Dundee, we place a lot of weight on them.
The interview consists of short independent 'stations'. This means that you get five fresh starts, so if a station doesn't go well, it's not the end of the world. Pretty much every candidate will find that some stations go better than others. The MMI format helps to even out this fluctuation in interview performance so there’s less for you to worry about on the day.
After your interview, you will complete a short debrief with a member of academic staff. This is your opportunity to discuss aspects of the interview and hear more about becoming a student nurse with us.
Preparing for your interview is very important. Before you attend, please take time to consider the following questions:
- Why have I chosen this profession?
- What will I be expected to do as a nurse in the field of nursing I have applied for?
- What are the current ethical and moral issues that affect contemporary health care?
- What qualities and life experiences do I have that will help me successfully progress through my nursing career?
- What strategies would I use to cope with challenging situations that I might encounter in my everyday life?
- How will I cope with the varying demands related to the academic requirements of a nursing degree programme?
If you are eligible for a video interview, it will have the same format of five interview stations which last six minutes each, but you won’t have to move around the room.
Applied for more than one nursing course?
We may still be considering your other applications. Despite this, you only need to attend one interview and you will only receive one invite to interview.
Our interviews are generic and cover all our nursing courses. You should book your interview as soon as possible to ensure you can secure a suitable time and date to attend.
Don't worry, we’ll let you know if there are updates to your other applications and will try to let you know before your interview. If we are unable to let you know beforehand, your interview will still cover you for both courses.
It’s natural to want to share you experience with others, however, we ask you not to discuss the specific topics or tasks at the stations with other applicants, school friends, or online.
Although there is little evidence that knowing the station details in advance makes a different to performance, we feel that the integrity of the system is better upheld if the topics and tasks of individual stations are confidential. We would appreciate your cooperation with this.
On the day
Managing your nerves
We recognise that MMIs are stressful, just like other kinds of interview. We don’t want this to stop you from giving your best performance. If it’s obvious that you’re becoming a bit flustered, our interviewers will be helpful, encouraging, and will put you at ease.
Dress smartly, please don’t wear jeans or trainers. If you are struggling for an outfit, your school uniform will be fine.
On the day of your interview, tours of our Dundee City campus (including accommodation) will be available at 12:00 and 15:00. Tours will depart and arrive from the Dalhousie Building and will take approximately 40 minutes.
If these times don’t work for you, please email us and we will try our best to arrange an alternative time for you.
Invite to interview
If you are invited to interview, we will email your invitation to both your personal and @dundee.ac.uk email address. You will not be notified of an invitation via UCAS.
Rather than issuing all invitations at once, we release them in phases depending on when your application has been assessed by our Admissions Team.
Where possible, we will try to give you at least two weeks' notice to allow you to make your travel arrangements.
We hold our interviews between January and March. It is wise not to plan holidays over this period so that you don’t miss out on an interview date. Our booking system will allow you to choose from a selection of dates and times and we advise that you book quickly to secure a slot which is best for you.
When making travel arrangements you should plan to be with us for approximately 2 hours:
- Registration: 20 minutes
- Interview: 35 minutes
- Post-interview debrief: 30 minutes
- Optional tour of campus: 40 minutes
We aim to communicate decisions within 2 weeks of you attending an interview. You will be notified of any updates to your application by email to both your personal and @dundee.ac.uk email address. If we make you an offer, we will also let you know via UCAS.
