Dundee’s 4 year LLB in Scots and English Law satisfies the academic component of training to become a solicitor or advocate in Scotland, allowing progression to the vocational Diploma. It is also a recognised law degree for the purposes of admission to the Bar in England, and to the Institute of Professional Legal Studies and qualification for the legal professions in Northern Ireland.

The English Law LLB provides an excellent foundation for students who wish to take the Solicitors Qualifying Examinations (SQE) or indeed to qualify as lawyers in many common law jurisdictions globally.

The careers information panel below uses information from the UK-wide Graduate Outcomes survey. This survey does not make a distinction between English and Scots Law degrees, and will view all LLB courses at a University as one subject.

This means although we have graduates working as Advocates in Scottish courts, they are included in the category of Barristers and judges.

Dundee law graduates have gone onto secure traineeships and develop successful careers at home and abroad with leading firms and organisations. These include:

Our Scots law students have become advocates, barristers, members of the judiciary and a range of other legal roles in Scotland such as Law Clerk to the Lord President and roles in legal academia.

Dundee graduates have also used their law degrees, and the transferable skills they have acquired, to achieve success in many other fields, including working in regulatory bodies, forensic accountancy, the civil service and legal technology.

Lewis Thornton
“The practical nature of the course meant that I developed an understanding of the contexts within which various legal mechanisms operate, the advantages/disadvantages they offer, and the challenges they present. This was particularly so in my company and commercial law modules, which meant I had a strong foundation of knowledge to assist me throughout my interviews and assessments for my Training Contract. During my Training Contract, I hope to gain experience in a wide variety of both contentious and transactional seats, and to complete an international secondment in New York or Singapore. I then aspire to qualify in Linklaters’ London office and work towards joining their partnership one day. Dundee has prepared me to pursue these ambitions by combining a practical approach to teaching with the opportunity to develop my knowledge of multiple legal systems.”
