Studying medicine gives you a clear trajectory towards becoming a doctor. But what if you’d like the opportunity to study a specific topic in more detail or explore a more lab-based or theoretical area of medicine?

This is where an intercalated degree could be of benefit.

With an intercalated degree, you can spend a year studying a topic of interest, which has a number of benefits:

  • you’ll be more informed about different options for your career post-graduation
  • you can gain new transferable skills, including research skills
  • gain a deeper insight into a subject area that interests you

Both general and vascular surgical care have wide-ranging applications across both benign and malignant disease.

In cancer care, 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

A significant proportion of these patients will be treated at least in part with a surgical resection.

With the increasing age and a comorbid status of the population, many patients require complex pre- and post-operative workup.

Therefore, an understanding of surgical care and its complex interactions with oncology, prehabilitation and rehabilitation medicine is essential.

BMSc General, Vascular and Academic Surgery will provide you with a broad understanding of key topics in surgery. These include practical components and essential surgical skills.

The course will include specialist teaching in key topics in surgery. Additional training will also be provided in research methods. You will be able to further extend your knowledge with an individual research project chosen from a diverse portfolio.
