Anatomical landmarks and sustainable prescribing

Medical Art student Lucy Southwell created inclusive anatomy illustrations and sustainable prescribing visuals for medical teaching

From September to December 2021, Medical Art postgraduate student Lucy Southwell joined the TILT team and worked closely with the Medical Artist to create a series of Illustrations for teaching purposes in the School of Medicine.

Anatomical landmarks

With a specific focus on diversity, Lucy created a collection of 2D illustrations highlighting important anatomical landmarks, at the request of Seaneen McDougall, Senior Lecturer in Human Anatomy and Anatomy Lead for the MBChB programme.

During module auditing, Seaneen noted 11 photographs that could be improved upon to be more diverse and inclusive. As a talented illustrator, Lucy created a bespoke series based on these photographs, with a focus on different skin colours and more female as well as male representation. Making sure to contain all information present in the photographs, Lucy successfully created a resource that could be easily integrated into the curriculum and used on a wider scale for years to come – both for anatomy and clinical skills teaching.

Sustainable prescribing

The environmental impact of prescribing and medication is an important topic that needs to be considered by students and current clinicians alike. To highlight the impact on the environment, Lucy created a graphic illustration for Dr Shalini Gupta, Senior Lecturer in Undergraduate Medicine, for a module focusing on eco-friendly prescribing. The extent of medication in our eco system – from water treatment plants not removing pharmaceuticals to their eventual absorption by animals – is highlighted in this illustration, which has proven to be a valuable and impactful teaching resource.
