Dermatology – Collagen Fibres, Melanin Production and Neural Crest Cells

Diagram of the integumentary system showing the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis, accompanied by two diagrams of cellular structure within the dermis for Caucasian, Black and Asian skin. Labelled structures in the cellular diagram: fibroblasts, ground substance, macrophages, collagen fibres and elastin. In Black/Asian skin the collagen fibres are closely stacked and smaller, parallel to the epidermis, and more and larger macrophages and fibroblasts are present.

Overview

Project Sponsor: Dr Shona Ogilvie, Dermatology, School of Medicine

Medical Artist: Eve Laws

Created as a teaching aid, two of the three illustrations focused on the structural/cellular differences in caucasian, black and asian skin. An incredibly important part of our curriculum is representation and diversity and the medical artist always strives to include as much representation as possible. These illustrations were created in Adobe Photoshop and Procreate.
