On this page

Drawing on cutting-edge research, WLC Ltd offer consultancy in niche markets where they have specialist and highly developed expertise. They provide creative, expert and realistic advice to clients, consultants and contractors who wish to improve the whole life performance of their assets or those parts of their assets for which they are responsible. They disseminate their research and the tools they have developed through a variety of knowledge transfer mechanisms including training and the provision of pragmatic guidance to practitioners on a wide range of subjects.

Founded in 2004, originally to commercialise the results of a major EPSRC funded programme “A Generic Approach to Whole Life Costing”, the company’s activities have expanded to encompass the commercialisation of all the intellectual property and expertise developed by the Construction Management Research Unit (CMRU). Supported by the research carried out by the CMRU, the company is ideally positioned to realise the synergies between academic research and practising professionals. The company’s multi-disciplinary staff, of whom most are qualified to PhD standard, include Civil, Mechanical and Environmental Engineers, Social, Natural and Computer Scientists.

By bringing together a unique blend of academic and professional expertise WLC Ltd. aim to improve the performance of the construction industry through contract research and consultancy in all areas of construction management. Their expertise spans the whole discipline of construction project management including building, infrastructure (civil engineering), nuclear construction and petrochemicals and their client base includes the Infrastructure & Projects Authority, the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), High Speed Two, Tidal Lagoon Power, National Training Academy for Rail (NTAR), Tideway, Highland Reserve Forces and Cadets Association (HRFCA), National Skills Academy for Rail (NSAR), Andrew Black Design and a variety of local and central Government Authorities in the UK and overseas.

The funding for the research behind Whole Life Cost Evaluator originally comprised a grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) worth approximately £300,000 with a SMART award generating a further £50,000 and the company itself invested another £150,000.
