Tarek Himida studied a Masters in Dental Public Health at the University of Dundee. Having graduated in 2017, Tarek shares his experience of living and studying in Dundee, and the impact choosing Dundee has had on his career since.
When Tarek decided to take the first step towards postgraduate study, he knew little about the University of Dundee.
Tarek said, “I was looking into research opportunities in the UK, and I stumbled upon the Chevening Scholarship. As part of my Chevening Scholarship application, I applied to the University of Dundee. Dundee was one of my favourite options because they offered the Dental Public Health course.”
Tarek was offered a place to study at Dundee and decided to accept. Speaking about his decision, Tarek said “Dundee, for me, had the smoothest application process. Everything was super easy, and everyone was immensely helpful from the start.
“When I arrived in Dundee, there were systems in place to support me. Everything was explained clearly.”
The University of Dundee is 1st in the UK for Dentistry (Complete University Guide 2025) and offers a range of postgraduate dentistry courses, including the Masters in Dental Public Health. The one-year course focuses on dental public health strategies that aim to make a difference in local, national, and international communities.
Telling us more about the course, Tarek explained that it was perfect as he was able to pick the subjects and modules that he was interested in studying. “One of my favourite things about the course was learning alongside students from the School of Medicine. Having the opportunity to learn about public health as well as dental public health has been a great thing for my resume and my career development.”

Speaking about his time in Dundee, Tarek said “It was the first time I’d left my home country of Egypt. From my first week in Dundee, I made a lot of friends, and it felt like home.
There are so many societies; I tried sailing and boxing and was also involved with the philosophy and film societies. Everyone was so welcoming and still to this day Dundee feels like my second home.”

“I really like any chance I get to give back to the University and the people there. I'm happy to do it and I'm always looking for more opportunities to engage.”
Tarek said, “The University of Dundee has played a pivotal role in shaping my career and enabling my accomplishments. Looking back, none of this would have been possible without the incredible postgraduate education I received in the UK during one of the most rewarding periods of my life. To this day, the UK remains my beloved second home; one I cherish and return to whenever I can.”
