HRH The Prince of Wales gave Professor Coates the award that was in recognition 'for services to biology’.

Professor Coates has worked extensively with the Royal Society of Biology and has had tremendous impact on Life Sciences teaching in Dundee. Through his work with the Royal Society of Biology, Professor Coates has supported the development of a single voice for Biology in the UK, which is now having such a powerful effect on policy. Also he has been part of the development of an accreditation system for biology degrees that is changing the way University students are helped to develop not just their science skills, but their wider understanding of the world after Higher Education, and where they can contribute. In Dundee, Professor Coates led the reorganisation of our undergraduate teaching programmes and has helped establish Dundee as a centre for excellence in Life Sciences teaching.
