The results of the National Student Survey (NSS) 2020 were recently announced with continued successes for our Biological and Biomedical Sciences programmes.

Our degrees, offered through the Schools of Life Sciences and Medicine, maintained the high satisfaction rates that have been recorded in recent years.

Looking at individual topic areas, we are again top in the UK for Pharmacology with 100% overall satisfaction. For Biosciences, we are top in Scotland (93% overall satisfaction), while the Biology category recorded 100% satisfaction. For ‘Genetics’, where lower student numbers mean that results are collated over the previous two years, we scored 100% satisfaction also.

Respondents are asked 26 questions which are used to assess different aspects of student satisfaction, these include ‘The course is intellectually stimulating’ and ‘I have been able to contact staff when I needed to’.

In a separate survey of our recent graduates, 83.6% of those with degrees in the biological and biomedical sciences were in employment or further study at 15 months post-graduation.

Professor Jenny Woof, Associate Dean Quality and Academic Standards, commented “These NSS and employability results are highly encouraging. To record the best satisfaction scores year on year shows that our efforts to constantly enhance our degree programmes are working, and the continued high level of employability indicates that our graduates are equipped to be keenly competitive when it comes to applying for a wide range of jobs and further study opportunities”.

Dr Nick Brewer, Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching also commented “It is another very encouraging set of NSS results alongside the strong employability data. I am sure staff across both the School of Life Sciences and the School of Medicine are proud, and rightly so of these scores."

The University recorded overall satisfaction of 87.4% for full time students on undergraduate degrees, well above the sector average and placing Dundee 4th in Scotland for overall satisfaction.
