Christina Schilde appointed as a lecturer

Christina was born in Germany and first came to Dundee in 1999 as a PhD student in the Division of Cell and Developmental Biology (CDB) working with Prof. Jeff Williams. After a period working as postdoc at the University of Konstanz in Germany she returned to Dundee and CDB in 2008 to take up a postdoctoral researcher role with Prof. Pauline Schaap. Christina’s research interests are unicellular Protists and the evolution and genomics of amoebozoans. She has worked with solitary and social amoebas as well as ciliates. As a recognised member of the Dicty-community and the Scottish Society of Developmental Biologists she has co-organised national meetings and peer-reviewed for journals. 

Christina has built up her teaching experience through teaching on the Cell and Developmental Biology level 3 course and supervising students in the lab including Honours, Masters and PhD students. She has undertaken a PG certificate in Academic Practice in Higher Education and was subsequently awarded a Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy in 2020.

Christina said “I have been teaching for the past few years and enjoyed the interaction with students from different backgrounds and countries. I’m excited to start work as a lecturer within the research-strong School of Life Sciences and contribute with my research background to the curriculum.”

In addition to her research work, Christina has been a very active member of the School community. For many years, she has served as a member of the SLS Research Staff Association Committee and postdoc rep on the School Board and School Research Committee. She has also been involved in the University Athena SWAN steering group. Finally, Christina has participated in public engagement events in the School including Open Door Days and Royal Society Masterclasses.
