External examining

The Policy and Code of Practice on External Examining of Taught Programmes sets out the role, powers and responsibilities that the University assigns to its external examiners for taught programmes. It is aligned with the expectations and indicators of sound practice described in the QAA's Quality Code for Higher Education. The Policy and Code of Practice is supported by a Handbook for External Examiners and a Handbook for Schools about External Examining‌.

We ask our external examiners to produce an annual report using the University's External Examiner Report Form.

External examiner appointments are formally approved, on behalf of the University Court, by the Quality and Academic Standards Committee following a recommendation from the relevant School. Schools are required to submit a completed External Examiner Appointment Form to the Quality and Academic Standards office to progress the appointment. Appointments are for 4 years. Schools must submit a completed External Examiner Extension Form to the Quality and Academic Standards office to extend the appointment.
