"The volume Post-Crash Economics: Plurality and Heterodox Ideas in Teaching and Research edited by Carlo Morelli and Omar Feraboli was, without a doubt, one of my publishing programme highlights for 2017 and has had almost 2,500 downloads to date." Laura Pacey (Senior Editor of Economics at Palgrave Macmillan)

School of Business colleagues Dr Omar Ferboli and Dr Carlo Morelli ran a project looking at the state of academic teaching and research in economics, in light of the 2007/08 global economic crash, which highlighted the inability of mainstream economic theory to explain the real world. Over the past decade, mainstream economics has been extensively criticised and there has been demand worldwide for alternative, heterodox and innovative approaches both in research and teaching.

The primary output of the project was publication of the book; "Post-Crash Economics: Plurality and Heterodox Ideas in Teaching and Research". The project focussed thoroughly on a number of key areas and also delivered excellent results in the form of:

  • A Conference on Teaching Economics in April 2016;
  • A survey on students’ personal experiences and reflections on being taught economics at university;
  • The book “Post-Crash Economics: Plurality and Heterodox Ideas in Teaching and Research”, published in November 2017;
  • A Conference on Teaching Economics in June 2018;
  • A cooperation with academics from several universities in the UK and in Germany, who attended the Conferences and contributed to the book;
  • A collaboration with Palgrave Macmillan who published the book, attended and provided funds for the Conferences;
  • The article “Shaping the thinking of the economists of the future”, published in The Herald Scotland in October 2018;
  • Participation in the Palgrave Macmillan Campaign on Academic Excellence which will be launched in 2019.
