Traditionally international commercial law graduates would pursue careers with law firms, corporations, in the financial sector and in government service.  Today, as international commerce becomes a pervasive force in our daily lives, graduates have a broader range of additional opportunities within international organizations, non-governmental organizations, think-tanks and academia.

Whichever direction you take, you can see from the profiles below that the success enjoyed by our graduates is based not only on the legal knowledge they have acquired during their LLM, but the wider skills they have developed whilst at Dundee Law School.

When you join Dundee Law School you will have access to dedicated careers support, both during and after your studies, through the Careers Service.  This includes 1-1 advice on constructing your cv and preparing for interviews.  Students also benefit from the guidance of our academics who have a wide range of international insights and experience from legal practice.  We maintain strong connections with our Alumni who have run careers focused Q&A sessions and many are also involved in Mentoring.

Internships

We support our students who wish to apply for competitive internships – these can form part of your LLM or be undertaken after your studies.  Our students have succeeded in securing prestigious internships in a range of international organisations, including the Council of the European Union, the European Court of Human Rights and the Hague Conference on Private International Law.  And for some, internships can lead directly to a full time paid role.

Pagoda Projects

LLM students can also apply for a global internship with our partners Pagoda Projects to develop employability skills and gain valuable international work experience.  A Pagoda internship, can be undertaken in a variety of locations globally, or done remotely.  Either way it lasts 8 weeks and takes the place of the LLM dissertation.  Students complete an internship report.

“After my graduation from University of Dundee, I went on to complete the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) and was Called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2013. I then returned to the Ghana Army and later studied for the Post-Call Law Course at the Ghana Law School, leading to my being Called to the Ghana Bar in 2015. While back in the army, I served in many appointments including Instructor, at the Ghana Military Academy and Chief of the Technical Investigations Cell of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. I also taught as an adjunct lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration and Mountcrest University College, before retiring from the Army in 2018. Currently, I work as an investigator for a mining company and conduct consultancy services for a law firm where I provide expert advice on commercial and technology law matters.”

“During my course I got acquainted with new legal systems that are very different to those of my home country, Bulgaria. I gained a broader perspective which is very helpful in my daily work engagements. My unit works almost exclusively with the EU institutions as well as other foreign bodies, so understanding something more that my own Bulgarian legal system is crucial. I now work at the Central Coordination Unit Directorate which is responsible for the overall monitoring and coordination of foreign funds in Bulgaria.”

“After graduation I returned to the law firm where I worked and then became a partner. I subsequently joined the public sector in 2015 as senior legal adviser to the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), managers of Nigeria’s sovereign wealth fund. I have been involved in the entire gamut of NSIA's operations, from investments to regulatory compliance to stakeholder engagement. This has given me the opportunity to participate in the structuring, documentation and implementation of some of the most important infrastructure projects being undertaken across diverse sectors in Nigeria over the last six years. My LLM degree from Dundee played a major role in my career progression, in particular in deepening my knowledge of international commercial law.”
