What is in the Political Staffer Resource Centre

The Political Staffer Resource Centre shares the recommendations generated by the research project The Human Resource Management of Political Staffers by Professor Jennifer Lees-Marshment. These recommendations were generated by asking political staffers and those working in close association with them what best practices they had experienced, observed and developed over time. They are therefore grounded in reality, or ‘doable’ when working within the constraints of politics and government.

The recommendations are provided in an easily accessible form so you can find specific advice on a specific topic quickly, or take longer to browse multiple topics in the way that suits you. Topics include:

  • The role of the political staffer
  • Recruiting and selecting political staffers
  • Orientation and onboarding political staffers
  • Ongoing training & career development for political staffers
  • Making workloads in political offices feasible
  • Giving impactful feedback
  • Building positive cultures in political offices
  • Maintaining morale and motivation amongst political staffers
  • Wellbeing strategies for political staffers
  • Improving the HRM of political staffers
  • Advocating for better HRM for political staffers

It provides examples and the words of those who have done the role of to help illustrate why and how to implement recommendations.
