Doctors with disabilities (chronic illness, physical or learning impairments, mental health conditions) are an essential part of the healthcare workforce. However, medical students with disabilities (MSWD) struggle with belonging, academic outcomes and burnout. Most studies regarding support of MSWD are from a small number of Global North countries, with voices from other contexts lacking.
This proposed PhD comprises three studies. Firstly, a narrative review of global trends in published literature on disability in health professions education. Secondly, examination of differences in language used in policy documents in different countries, to infer the countries’ positions on disability. Thirdly, a qualitative study of how attitudes, policies and practices related to supporting MSWD differ across a range of contexts, using deep, reflective conversations between academics in different countries. This is a really exciting opportunity to broaden the literature on disability in medical education, to question assumptions and drive forward new ways of thinking.
