We are pleased to offer a unique opportunity to join our innovative research team at the Endorobotics Lab, led by Dr. Luigi Manfredi, within the School of Medicine at the University of Dundee. This project is an exciting chance to tackle critical challenges in the ergonomics of flexible endoscopy, with a focus on operator well-being and procedural efficiency.

Flexible endoscopy is a cornerstone of modern diagnostics and treatment, but operators often face physical strain and cognitive fatigue, leading to increased risk of musculoskeletal injuries and reduced performance. This project seeks to develop advanced ergonomic solutions that enhance the usability of flexible endoscopy systems, improving both operator comfort and device precision.

The student will focus on designing and evaluating ergonomic features, including optimized device interfaces, lightweight and intuitive designs, and feedback mechanisms for real-time monitoring of operator strain. Using soft and cost-effective materials, the project will develop devices with superior maneuverability and adaptability to the dynamic clinical environment. Simulations with anatomical models and clinical usability studies will validate the designs.

This multidisciplinary project will be conducted in collaboration with the School of Science and Engineering and the Centre for Medical Engineering and Technology (CMET), providing access to cutting-edge facilities and fostering a collaborative environment.

Desired skills and qualifications

We are seeking a candidate with:

  • Strong communication skills (oral and written).
  • A degree in Biomedical Engineering, Human Factors Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
  • A passion for scientific research, particularly in medical devices and ergonomics.
  • Experience in usability testing or medical device design (preferred but not required).

What we offer

  • An opportunity to work in a vibrant, collaborative research environment.
  • Access to state-of-the-art facilities for conducting innovative research.
  • Mentorship from experienced researchers and faculty members.
  • A chance to contribute to a transformative project with global healthcare implications.

Diversity statement

Our research community thrives on the diversity of students and staff which helps to make the University of Dundee a UK university of choice for postgraduate research. We welcome applications from all talented individuals and are committed to widening access to those who have the ability and potential to benefit from higher education.
