Biography

Simon Fowler worked at the Public Record Office and The National Archives on and off for over thirty years between 1979 and 2011. His last position there was editing TNA’s much-missed Ancestors Magazine. He also edited Family History Monthly and was the archivist at the Society of Genealogists. He is at present a freelance writer and researcher specialising in military history.

He has written many, many articles on a wide range of subjects for both commercial magazines and academic journals, including Family Tree Magazine and the Journal of the Society of Archivists. Simon has also published a number of books on military genealogy and social history. Tracing Your Army Ancestors (Pen & Sword, 2017), Tracing Your First World War Ancestors (Pen & Sword, 2013) and Workhouse: the people, the places, life behind closed doors (Pen & Sword, 2015). He recently contributed two chapters to Val Johnson, Simon Fowler and David Thomas, The Silence of the Archives(Facet, 2017).

 He has a BA in Social Science from the University of East Anglia, and the MA and Diploma in Archive Administration from University College London.
