Piotr Jaworski

Biography

Piotr’s journey in economics began at the Warsaw School of Economics, where he earned his MA in Policy of International Trade. His passion for understanding economic transitions led him to the London School of Economics for an MSc in Political Economy of Transition, followed by an MBA from the University of Minnesota, broadening his international perspective.

Returning to Warsaw, Piotr embarked on his academic career, teaching economics while simultaneously serving in the Polish Civil Service. This dual role uniquely positioned him to contribute to Poland’s accession to the European Union, participating in negotiations on commercial insurance as an Advisor to the Minister of Finance.

In 2003, Piotr’s dedication to pension system economics culminated in a PhD from the Warsaw School of Economics. His thesis, recognized with the first prize for the best Polish Economics thesis by the French BISE bank, didn’t just remain in academia—it directly influenced the reform of the Polish pension system, bridging the gap between theoretical research and practical policy implementation.

Following his PhD, Piotr’s quest for knowledge and experience led him to the UK. At University College London, he transitioned from postdoctoral fellow to College Teacher, laying the foundation for a rich academic career in Britain. After a brief stint at Birkbeck College, he found his home in Scotland, joining Edinburgh Napier University in 2006.

For over 17 years at Edinburgh Napier, Piotr’s role expanded beyond the lecture hall. He led multiple programs, including MSc International Business Management and BA Economics with Management, while also spearheading transnational education initiatives across Asia. His commitment to nurturing the next generation of economists resulted in the successful supervision of several PhD and DBA candidates.

Piotr’s expertise and dedication have not gone unnoticed. In 2014, he was honoured with the Outstanding Polish in Scotland (Science) Award by Pangea International, a testament to his contributions to both academia and the broader community. His influence extends beyond his home institution, as evidenced by his extensive experience as an external examiner for prestigious universities across the UK and internationally.

August 2023 marked a new chapter in Piotr’s career as he joined the Dundee University Business School. Here, he continues to shape the future of economics education as the Programme Leader and Admissions Lead for the MA Economics. His current teaching portfolio includes “Business Skills for Economists” for undergraduates and postgraduate courses in “International Strategies” and “Managing International Trade and Investment.”

At Dundee, Piotr’s role transcends teaching. As a member of both the Quality Assurance and Student Experience Committee and the International Committee, he is actively involved in enhancing the academic experience and global outlook of the university.

A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Certified Management & Business Educator of the Chartered Association of Business Schools, Piotr brings a wealth of experience to his current research interests.
