Nick Barratt

Dr Nick Barratt obtained his PhD in state finance and fiscal history from King’s College, London in 1996 before working for the Public Record Office, now The National Archives, from 1996-2000 as a specialist adviser. He established Sticks Research Agency in 2000, the same year he left to work as a specialist researcher at the BBC. Programme credits include ‘House Detectives’, ‘Invasion’, ‘Omnibus’ and the BAFTA-nominated ‘Seven Wonders of the Industrial World’. Since 2002, he has moved into presenting, including the triple-BAFA nominated ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ (BBC2, 2004), ‘History Mysteries’ (BBC2, 2005), ‘Hidden House History’ (History Channel, 2006), ‘So You Think You’re Royal’ (Sky One, Sky Three 2007), ‘Secrets from the Attic’ (ITV1, 2008), ‘Brit Camp’ (Teachers TV, 2008), ‘Live the Dream: As Seen on Screen (ITV3, 2009), ‘Missing Millions’ (ITV1, 2011), ‘Find My Past’ (Yesterday, 2011) and ‘Great British Story: West Midlands’ (BBC1 regional, 2012) on television, and ‘Tracing Your Roots’ for Radio 4 (2005-2009).

He is also the editor of two volumes for the Pipe Roll Society, and has contributed several articles on English state finance to the English Historical Review and International History Review, as well as History Today and BBC History magazines.

Currently a teaching fellow for the University of Dundee’s Centre for Archival and Information Studies, he was previously a visiting lecturer at Roehampton University, part of the University of Surrey, teaching the Norman Conquest in 1999; and is on the advisory board for Kingston University’s Centre for the Historic Record.

Nick is currently Editor in Chief for ‘Your Family History’ and has been a weekly columnist for the Daily Telegraph (2005-2008), as well as a regular columnist for various genealogical magazines, such as ‘Family History Monthly’, ‘Your Family Tree’ and ‘Practical Family History’. He also runs the Family History Show website and vodcast, presenting a 45 minute film each month on aspects of family and local history.
