Biography
Lorna earned her PhD in Forensic Toxicology from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, in 2016. She also holds an MSc in Forensic Toxicology from the University of Glasgow and a BSc (Hons) in Analytical and Forensic Chemistry from the University of Strathclyde.
Research
As the Principal Investigator for Forensic Toxicology at the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science, University of Dundee, Lorna leads the forensic toxicology research portfolio.
Her primary area of research focuses on new psychoactive substances, including their detection in seized materials, workplace, clinical and forensic samples. Additionally, she investigates the stability of these drugs in biological samples such as blood, urine, and oral fluid, aiming to enhance detection techniques and improve analytical reliability.
Supervision
Lorna currently supervises several PhD students. She welcomes PhD applications from motivated candidates interested in pursuing advanced research in forensic drug analysis, toxicology, or related disciplines.
Teaching
She leads the part-time distance MSc Drug Analysis and Toxicology program, managing multiple modules and providing her expertise to professionals actively working in the field.
Lorna is passionate about advancing teaching standards within this discipline and ensuring the long-term sustainability and growth of forensic drug analysis and toxicology as a vital area of study.
Committees
Currently, Lorna chairs the LTG and the 2024/2025 Current Trends in Forensic Toxicology Symposium. She is a Chartered Chemist with the Royal Society of Chemistry and a grant reviewer for the organisation. Additionally, she is a board member of the European Workplace Drug Testing Society (EWDTS) and a member of the Society of Forensic Toxicology (SOFT), the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), and the United Kingdom and Ireland Association of Forensic Toxicology (UKIAFT). Lorna also serves on the Advisory Council for the Misuse of Drugs and the Scottish Toxicology and Pathology Investigation Network.
