Biography

Dr McConville is an academic general practitioner. Graduating at the University of Dundee (MBChB, 1998). He also holds DRCOG, DFSRH, FRCGP, Masters of Medical Education and an Educational Doctorate. He has worked as a previous 'GP with a specialist Interest' in substance misuse, with SIGN (Obesity) guidelines development and multiple roles within the Royal College of General Practitioners.

His research interests are in mental health, student support /performance management , professionalism and medical education. He has worked for the University in a variety of teaching and leadership roles across the medical education spectrum since August 2011. He is a member of the staff LGBT+ network, Equality & Diversity champions group and is a University of Dundee harassment adviser.

As Associate Dean (Learning & Teaching) within the School of Medicine, I have overall responsibility for upholding the Universities’ core values and to help deliver the School’s strategic priorities and vision, particularly in relation to teaching and learning and an excellent student experience.

I am specifically responsible for providing leadership and direction in relation to enhancing the quality of teaching programmes and experiences for students, as well as activities aimed at ensuring that all staff are supported, valued and engaged with delivery of the School’s strategic mission.

Research

Dr McConville's predominant interests are in behavioural sciences and medical education. His MMedEd focussed on psychological elements associated with medical students' entry to university utilising a sports psychology tool. His professional doctorate in education has applied a sociological lens via symbolic interactionism to explore the professional identity formation of GP trainers. He has also been involved in multiple projects that focus on the spectrum of Medical Education from undergraduate to postgraduate level.
