Biography

Ian is Programme Manager for DIRECT (Diabetes Research on patient stratification) a large European-funded consortium involving 20 different academic institutions and 6 pharmaceutical companies. Its purpose is to identify novel markers that can help improve and tailor the management and treatment of individual patients with type 2 diabetes – as well as those who are at risk of developing the disease. The University is the ‘Managing Entity’ for the consortium which is led by Prof Ewan Pearson. Ian is a graduate of Dundee and was formerly Manager of Tayside Tissue Bank where he was instrumental in establishing the systems that enabled the Bank to be “Accredited” by Health Improvement Scotland (HIS). Ian originally trained as a virologist, subsequently gaining his PhD in the study of respiratory infections. Prior to joining the Tissue Bank he previously held senior posts within a biopharmaceutical CRO, as well as having previous experience with Welcome Diagnostics, the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the NHS
