Professor David Sigsworth OBE FRSE has spent more than six decades at the heart of the energy industry — a journey that has taken him from an engineering apprenticeship in Yorkshire to the boardroom of one of the UK’s largest utilities, and now to chairing Exergy3 Limited, a spin-out delivering breakthrough ultra-high temperature heat storage technology.

David’s career has always been about driving innovation and change. At Scottish Hydro-Electric plc and later SSE plc, he pioneered new approaches to energy trading, helped build vital gas and CHP generation, and led early projects demonstrating that offshore wind could succeed even in deep waters. Later, he chaired the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, transforming it into a world-leading environmental regulator, and led the Scottish Fuel Poverty Forum and the government’s Strategic Working Group, which helped shape legislation to tackle fuel poverty across Scotland.

Alongside these roles, David has guided companies, industry bodies, and charities that advance sustainability and protect consumers — always with an eye on innovation and the public good. His long-standing ties with Dundee — as Honorary Professor at the University and as a leader of local cultural and educational initiatives — reflect his commitment to community as well as industry.

Cofounding and becoming Chair of Exergy3 (since 2019) was the natural continuation of this journey. It brings together his technical background, strategic leadership, and lifelong passion for creating a cleaner, fairer energy system.
