Biography
Chris Byrne engages with visual culture as an artist, curator, educator and writer.
He lectures in Context & Theory. He currently leads the research dissertation component of undergraduate Design courses across DJCAD, and teaches communication theory for Communication Design students. Prior to joining Communication Design he taught on the Master of Fine Art course and in media theory at undergraduate level.
Originally trained as a sculptor, Chris has a long standing interest in moving image media, in particular video art and experimental film. In addition to his own artistic experiments, he practiced as a curator and researcher over three decades. As well as the moving image, he explored networked and collaborative art practices, internet art, sound, and performance. More recently he has rediscovered an enthusiasm for artworks experimenting with more traditional media.
Chris curated and organised numerous projects, exhibitions, performances, and residencies with artists across Scotland and internationally. He has written on art and media related topics, publishing in a number of UK and international imprints.
Chris continues to make drawings and video work when he finds time.
Research
Chris's efforts at the present time are directed towards reviving his practice as an artist.
Forthcoming and ongoing projects and exhibitions
November 2019 - March 2020: Very Large Works, online group show organised by Noemata, a pavilion at The Wrong Biennale.
November 2018 - November 2019: "Live in your head", a series of social media based events commemorating the landmark 1969 exhibition "Live in your head: When Attitudes Become Form". The events entail creating visual and textual material during a series of 24 hour periods over the course of a year, for an audience of networked participants. The material attempts to unpack ideas around art practice whilst attempting to take the slogan of the original exhibition literally. The project is currently ongoing and will result in a series of short run artist's publications in 2020.
