Biography

Alan Bainbridge studied law at Dundee University, graduating in 1994.

Alan is a qualified lawyer in each of Scotland, England and Wales and Hong Kong. Following graduation, Alan completed his legal training in Edinburgh and then moved to London to join City firm Norton Rose Fulbright in 1999, where he is now a partner overseeing mergers and acquisitions and corporate advisory in the banks and financial institutions sector.

Alan’s career has involved a number of periods overseas, including a number of years in Hong Kong working on China based transactions and a number of years in the Middle East. During his time in the Middle East, Alan oversaw the agreement of a memorandum of understanding with the University of the United Arab Emirates to develop work experience programmes and research resource sharing for that university’s law undergraduates, with the aim of facilitating increased collaboration between the private sector and local universities to drive new initiatives and assist in the push for greater diversity in the legal profession.

In 2005, Alan moved to take up a position of Legal Director at Barclays Bank PLC in London, where he worked for a number of years before returning to private practice to specialise in the banking and finance sector. Alan regularly advises on bank specific legislation and is a contributor to A Practitioner’s Guide to Individual Conduct and Accountability in Financial Services Firms. Alan is also Co-author of the Banking Reform Act chapter of Thomson Reuters’ Compliance publication and has also written articles on the Act for other publications including the Journal of International Banking and Financial Law.
