The course will help to gain knowledge on fundamental questions about music and how our life is affected by music.

You will learn about music and emotion, cognition; the neuroscience of music; music education; music therapy; how music affects our wellbeing; and how psychological research understands and aids musical performance.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • gain understanding of the evolutionary, psychological, neuroscientific, and developmental aspects of music
  • explore the psychology of talent and creativity in music
  • examine the psychological aspects of music perception, production, and expression
  • understand the relationship between music and somatic and mental health
  • learn about music and education
  • receive an introduction to the use of music as a therapeutic method

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand how music is related to everyday life
  • understand how music affects people
  • know how to study music in psychology
  • understand the use of psychological knowledge in music education, therapy and performance

Teaching methods / timetable

The lectures will cover the background material and will be supported by personal study using compulsory and recommended readings.

There will also be student-led presentations and discussions. Professional guests will be invited to demonstrate aspects of the content material in applied setting (educators, art/music therapists, performers, researchers).
