Directed Reading on Research Design module (PO32018)
You will learn about research design for dissertations in politics and international relations
The module will begin with an introductory lecture setting out its purpose and the general approach. You will work with the appointed supervisor to develop a detailed reading programme related to your research.
You will follow a programme of directed readings. This will include up to three small group meetings. This will allow you to engage in discussion and in-depth analysis of literature and research design.
The exact nature of these readings will depend entirely on the topic of the dissertation.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- learn and understand various research paradigms applicable to political studies. This will allow you to assess and choose suitable frameworks for your dissertation work critically
- develop your ability to clearly and comprehensively communicate your research findings. You will develop this in both written and verbal formats
- enhance your presentation skills critical for academic and professional success
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- apply knowledge of research design. This will allow you to select appropriate methodologies for investigating political phenomena. You will also be able to showcase applied knowledge, skills, and understanding relevant to political studies research
- use a wide range of research and analytical methods to produce a clear and comprehensive presentation in a research proposal. This will allow you to showcase skills in communication, technology use, and numerical analysis
Assignments / assessment
- 1,500-word extended research design proposal (90%)
- multiple-choice-question assessments (10%)
This module does not have a final exam.
