​​Healthcare organisations are complex environments where leadership matters at every level. This module gives you a rigorous grounding in leadership theory, from traditional approaches to more recent developments. You'll explore how power, culture, and organisational structures shape what leaders can do and how they are perceived. 

​Using a cognitive mapping approach, you'll analyse the internal and external factors that influence leadership in practice. You'll also consider healthcare policy and workforce priorities, and reflect critically on your own leadership style. 

​The module is available in blended format, with some face-to-face teaching at City Campus, and as fully online distance learning. It is a programme-specific module for MSc Leadership in Healthcare, MSc Nursing, and MSc Advanced Practice. It is also a core module for the MSc Leadership in Healthcare Management, delivered in collaboration with the School of Business Studies.

​In this module, you will: 

  • ​identify and analyse how power and culture shape leadership in healthcare settings 
  • ​examine a range of leadership theories and models, including recent developments 
  • ​explore how cognitive mapping can reveal the factors that influence leadership in practice 
  • ​think strategically about workforce challenges, organisational priorities, and healthcare policy 

​By the end of this module, you will be able to: 

  • ​critically analyse the concept of leadership and a range of leadership theories and models 
  • ​critically evaluate theories and models of organisational culture and power in health and care settings 
  • ​explore and analyse the personal and organisational factors that shape your own leadership practice and that of others​

Assignments / assessments

​​Coursework (100%) 

  • ​A 2,000-word essay based on a cognitive map, applying a choice of healthcare policies through a leadership in healthcare lens 

​This module does not have a final exam.​
