Evaluating Evidence module (PN50201)

​​Extensive evidence underpins good nursing practice and much of this comes from research. This module gives you the skills to find different types of evidence, evaluate appropriately and critically, and start to apply it in your professional context and by learning about others too. 

​You'll explore the different ways knowledge is produced, including different research paradigms and methodologies. You'll develop your ability to appraise research papers and in doing so begin to accumulate the judgement required to support robust and well-reasoned decisions. 

​The module is available on campus and online. It is the second core framework module and builds on the academic skills you developed in the Professional Academic Enquiry module. 

​What you will learn 

​In this module, you will: 

• ​Explore what evidence is and how it is produced 
• ​Examine different research paradigms and how they shape knowledge 
• ​Develop your critical appraisal skills for evaluating research 
• ​Use digital tools to support evidence evaluation 
• ​Interpret evidence relevant to your area of practice 

​By the end of this module, you will be able to: 

• ​Demonstrate critical understanding of a range of research paradigms 
• ​Demonstrate critical understanding of the theories and principles used to evaluate evidence in professional practice 
• ​Critically evaluate the evidence base underpinning your professional practice and develop recommendations relevant to it​

• ​2,000-word critical evaluation of a research paper 

​This module does not have a final exam.​
