The Standard for Childhood Practice, Standard 5 (SSSC, 2015) emphasises the importance of leading learning.

It states that people in leading roles should have a critical understanding of principles. This allows you to support and enable play, rest, and other opportunities and experiences.

This module offers a holistic perspective on wellbeing, development, and learning. You will learn how to lead learning.

To meet the needs of children and young people, there will be a focus on how to lead learning through play

You will be encouraged to place your learning within a connected framework.

This will bring together theoretical perspectives that make up practices. This is based on topics such as:

  • child development
  • pedagogical strategies
  • quality experiences
  • observation

There is an emphasis on the role of the practitioner in leading learning in children. You will be able to contextualise this within your own professional context.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • gain a deeper understanding of child development and children's learning and play
  • learn about the professional role of supporting learning and curricular approaches. This will allow you to build confidence in your professional context

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • show a critical understanding of the holistic nature of development and learning
  • show understanding of play and underpinning theories
  • show understanding of the role of the educator in leading learning
  • show an understanding of the way in which relevant organisational frameworks support educators in leading learning

Assignments / assessment

  • essay 1,000 words (50%)
    • essay topic is on play and learning
  • poster 1,000 words with presentation (50%) 

This module does not have a final exam.
