Developing Healthcare Practice in Child Nursing 2 module (NC22302)

​​As your nursing knowledge develops, you will encounter children and young people with increasingly complex health needs. This module builds on your earlier study to develop deeper understanding of pathophysiology, evidence-based care, and holistic assessment across a wider range of conditions. 

​You will explore the pathophysiology of common and complex disorders, examine medicine management including the challenges of polypharmacy, and consider the needs of children and young people with mental health conditions, sensory deficits, and learning disabilities. The module also covers holistic care planning frameworks, socio-environmental factors that shape children's lives, and the ethical and legal legislation underpinning children's nursing. 

​Delivered using a blended approach in the Dundee City Campus, the module is a core component of BSc, BSc Hons, and MSc Nursing courses leading to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. 

​What you will learn 

​In this module, you will: 

• ​Develop knowledge of the pathophysiology of common and complex disorders affecting infants, children, and young people 
• ​Examine medicine management for childhood conditions, including polypharmacy 
• ​Explore the needs of children and young people with mental health conditions, sensory deficits, or learning disabilities 
• ​Apply holistic assessment frameworks to plan and deliver complex care in family and community contexts 
• ​Understand the ethical, legal, and policy frameworks that underpin care from the unborn child to young adulthood 

​By the end of this module, you will be able to: 

• ​Demonstrate knowledge of illnesses and conditions that affect children, young people, and their families 
• ​Describe the holistic needs of children and young people in both acute hospital and community settings 
• ​Assess, identify, and discuss appropriate plans of care for children and young people experiencing common and complex health conditions 
• ​Use different methods of technology and innovation to support health needs, care, and health promotion​

Assignments / assessments

​​Written work (1,500 words) (50%) 

• ​A 1,500-word written assignment identifying the evidence base and theory behind your chosen topic and patient poster 
• ​Both parts of the assessment must be passed; any failed element must be retaken 

​Patient poster (50%)

• ​A patient information poster on your chosen topic, demonstrating your ability to communicate health information clearly 
• ​Both parts of the assessment must be passed; any failed element must be retaken 

​This module does not have a final exam.​
