MSc Applied Data Science and AI Project module (MA53004)
Work independently on a major research project in data science and AI. Solve real problems and learn to communicate your insights clearly.
In this project-based module, you’ll apply what you’ve learned in data science and AI to a real-world problem.
You’ll choose from a selection of projects and carry out a major investigation using advanced techniques from the programme. You might train machine learning models, apply deep learning, analyse unstructured data, or build a custom data pipeline.
Throughout the module, you’ll be supported by an academic supervisor, but the direction and execution are up to you. Crucially, you won’t just learn how to do the work – you’ll also learn how to explain it clearly. Whether it’s through a dissertation, a presentation, or a viva, you’ll practise communicating complex ideas to expert and non-expert audiences alike.
This project shows you can work independently, manage a technical investigation, and deliver insights with clarity and confidence. It helps you demonstrate the independence, initiative, and professionalism that are highly valued in both research and industry.
What you will learn
In this module, you will:
- plan and carry out a substantial independent research project in data science and AI
- apply advanced tools and methods such as machine learning, deep learning, and statistical modelling
- gather and process data from diverse sources, including unstructured or messy datasets
- evaluate the performance and ethical implications of your models
- communicate your findings clearly through writing, visualisation, and oral presentation
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- manage a complete data science or AI investigation from start to finish
- critically assess your own work and reflect on its strengths and limitations
- communicate your methods and results effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences
- show independence, initiative, and professionalism in managing your project
Assignments / assessment
- Coursework (100%) – includes:
- Dissertation report (written project)
- Oral presentation
- Viva voce examination (oral defence)
Teaching methods / timetable
- Individual supervision
- Regular one-to-one meetings with your academic supervisor
- Workshops and induction sessions
- Guidance on research skills, report writing, and presentation techniques
