Biography
Dr Agissilaos (Agis) Athanassoulis is an applied mathematician specialising in numerical analysis, scientific computing, and partial differential equations. He earned his PhD in Applied and Computational Mathematics from Princeton University under the supervision of Prof. Ingrid Daubechies. Following postdoctoral fellowships at institutions such as Cambridge, École Normale Supérieure and École Polytechnique, he is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Dundee.
Dr Athanassoulis has extensive experience developing and implementing numerical methods for complex physical systems, including stochastic nonlinear waves, quantum systems and multi-phase flows. His collaborators include Prof Themis Sapsis (MIT), Dr Mariya Ptashnyk (Heriot-Watt), Dr Irene Kyza (St Andrews) and Dr Odin Gramstad (DNV). He co-organised the Scottish Numerical Methods Networks 2017-18, 2018-2019, 2019-20. Currently he focuses on the development of structure-preserving solvers for nonlinear evolution PDEs, namely solvers that guarantee key qualitative properties of the continuous problem being automatically inherited by the numerical solution.
On the theoretical side, Dr Athanassoulis is a leader in the field of semiclassical asymptotics, where he pioneered the use of the smoothed Wigner transform in order to prove strong topology semiclassical estimates. Currently, he is applying these techniques to semiclassical decoherence – a key problem in quantum computing.
