Learn how to appreciate, follow and submit an extended piece of work. You will utilise a deeper and critical understanding of selected areas of law and ethics. You will develop:

  • originality of thought
  • research skills
  • analysis
  • argumentation
  • expression

What you will learn

In this module you will:

  • learn the required skills to select a dissertation topic. This will be relevant to Scots and/or English law connected to our LLM Healthcare Law and Ethics course
  • discuss your ideas on the topic with an appointed supervisor at the early stage in the dissertation year
  • discover how to present your dissertation with the help of useful editing skills (i.e. Table of Contents)
  • learn to use research assistant tools to help with referencing and citation
  • explore the typical methodology used in legal research, the doctrinal or black letter law approach
  • discuss the feasibility of including empirical studies. This will be done with ethical approval if involving human participants

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand dissertation topics that are of relevance to you. You will be able to select a relevant topic within provided parameters
  • bring together key skills for the preparation and writing of your dissertation. This will show original thought and excellent research skills
  • be able to analyse your topic. You will use learned methods of argument and expression to present your research clearly
  • complete a compelling and well-presented extended piece of independent work
