Governments are granted various powers to manage the state and its citizens. However, these powers are not unlimited.

This module covers the government’s use of power, as well as the options available to citizens when they are aggrieved by government action (or inaction).

As part of the United Kingdom’s constitutional structure, the government is granted various powers to govern the state and its citizens.

The effective use of these powers is critical to managing public services and responding to emergencies such as the Covid-19 pandemic. 

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • discuss the main political and judicial mechanisms for the accountability of government
  • learn how Human Rights are protected in the United Kingdom 

By the end of the module you will be able to:

  • locate, understand, and apply the relevant rules and principles to disputes between citizens and the government 
  • critically assess the role of the United Kingdom’s legal and political mechanisms in regulating the exercise of governmental power in light of the social, political and economic context in which it operates  
  • demonstrate and evidence a range of transferrable skills, such as oral and written communication and time-management

Teaching methods / timetable

This module will be delivered by a combination of lectures and tutorials.

Lectures will be used to present information and structure learning, with some interaction.

Tutorials will allow small group work and student led discussion.
