You will learn some of the ways that neuroscience knowledge and research can be used to improve human health and wellbeing. There will be a focus on the relief of pain. You will also cover therapeutic strategies to treat neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • explore the translational application of the GABAA receptor as a target for general anaesthetics
  • study the physiology of pain and the mechanisms of action of analgesic drugs
  • examine the mechanisms of addiction to analgesic drugs such as opioids. You will also learn about strategies used to combat this
  • learn about the symptoms and brain mechanisms of psychiatric disorders such as depression and schizophrenia. You will also learn about the pharmacological therapies available for their treatment
  • study the the pathological mechanisms underlying some of the neurodegenerative disorders that can impair cognition and movement. You will also be able to engage with research into the prevention and treatment of these disorders

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • show an understanding of the mechanisms of action of drugs that can alleviate pain and modify consciousness. You will also be able to appreciate the potential adverse effects of many of these drugs, such as addiction.
  • understand and explain the current therapeutic strategies used to treat psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. You will also understand how ongoing research is leading to promising new treatments for these conditions.
